For the first time in 10,000 years, farming is not the dominating industry
Interesting discussion. My main addition would be that in a sense, the farming=>service shift is inevitable. Industrialization takes a great deal of capital expenditure where services take relatively minor capital. It is the shortest path away from farming. A couple of simple examples are call centers (helpdesk or whatever you want to call it), BPO (Business Process Outsourcing), or even Gold Farming for the MMORPG market. You need an office, some PC’s, and connectivity. Low cost with a high return.
